PROVIDENCE (May 3, 2016) – John J. Barton was prominently featured in the Providence Business News article, “Barton embraces cooperation,” in connection with his recent receipt of the American Board of Trial Advocates Civility Award.
The Rhode Island Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) has given the Seth E. Bowerman Civility Award periodically to members of the state bench and bar who best exemplify the spirit of cooperation, camaraderie and civility epitomized by Bowerman, who was well-known and highly regarded in the legal community and who passed away after a long bout with cancer in 2014.
Barton is widely recognized as one of the most accomplished trial lawyers in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He has prevailed in over 50 civil jury trials, with a 97 percent success rate, including cases in such diverse fields as medical malpractice, product liability, anti-trust, police abuse and catastrophic personal injury. Barton is also an experienced appellate lawyer, having successfully pursued appeals in the 1st Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, and the Rhode Island Supreme Court.
Barton was inducted in 1997 into the elite American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), and currently serves as National Representative of its Rhode Island Chapter. For many years he also served as President of the Rhode Island ABOTA Chapter. Since 1991, Barton has maintained an AV Preeminent rating in the Martindale-Hubbell National Law Directory, the highest rating available for legal ability and ethical standards. He has been consistently named by the attorney rating service Super Lawyers to its top lawyers’ directory.
Barton is a founding member of the firm, and is senior partner in the firm’s Providence office. He frequently lectures on trial techniques, medical malpractice, mediation, and other legal topics to various national, regional and local groups of attorneys, health care providers, insurers, and business leaders.
