Following a competitive application and selection process, Rita E. Nerney has joined Leadership Rhode Island’s 2021 Rho II class.
Each year Leadership Rhode Island selects a diverse group of established and emerging leaders to participate in a thought-provoking, 10-month community leadership program. Participants refine and enhance their commitment to Rhode Island, and experience personal growth, professional development and community leadership by examining statewide issues through the perspectives of experts, on-site visits, readings, discussion groups, problem-solving exercises, and other experiential activities.
Rita is an attorney with Barton Gillman serving clients in general liability, professional liability, education law, employment law, and insurance coverage matters. Recognized for Professional Excellence in the Law by Rhode Island Monthly in 2019-20202, she is admitted to practice in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut.
Rita graduated, summa cum laude, from Roger Williams University School of Law, where she served as a judicial extern to the Honorable O. Rogeriee Thompson of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and completed internships with the Rhode Island League of Charter Schools, the Rhode Island Department of Education, and the Rhode Island Medical-Legal Partnership at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. She also served as a research assistant to Professor Colleen A. Brown, a corporate counsel extern for the Northeast Maritime Institute, and a law student partner for the Roger Williams University Pro Bono Collaborative. As a law clerk, Rita served the Honorable Gilbert V. Indeglia of the Rhode Island Supreme Court and the Rhode Island Supreme Court Trial Court Law Clerk Department. She currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for Girls on the Run Rhode Island, and on the Board of Directors of the Roger Williams University School of Law Alumni Association.
